Fall 2019 Day 5

We left Lyon early this morning and took the train to Beaune in the Burgundy region of France. It was a slow train not the high speed rail and I’ll tell you, that’s the best sleep ever!!  The gentle rocking of the train made it so hard to pay attention to when it was time to get off the train. It was only a 90 minute ride then we were in another world!  Beaune is an old city and it’s very small in comparison to Lyon. The historic center, where we are staying, is compact and easy to navigate. We figured out the way to and from our Airbnb super fast!  Our Airbnb is really nice. It’s smaller and at the top of the building so we have the angle of the roof to deal with but, it’s super cute and will work perfectly for our needs!!  I’ll try and post the video, maybe it’ll work this time. We decided to spend today just getting to know Beaune and not looking for any sites. We just wandered around the old town and sat and got our beginning education to Burgundian wine. It’s Chardonnay, mostly unoaked, and Pinot noir. We have had 4 glasses each so far today, and I can say for sure, even though these are not our typical go to grapes, Burgundy wine is delicious!  The French can make wine! That’s for sure!  After our first glass of wine we came back to our apartment and took a nap. The season was long and hard and sometimes we just get pooped!  We woke up with a few hours before our reservation so we went out and had another glass of wine each before dinner. Being in a wine-centric town has its perks!  It’s the only town I’ve ever been to that has more places for wine than for bread. Usually there is patisseries and boulangeries everywhere, but we had to search here!  But if you want a glass of wine, it’s all over the place. After that we went for our reservation, we only made one reservation in Lyon, last night, AMAZING, and one reservation in Beaune for tonight at a place called La Bouissonniere, a really great husband and wife run place that seated about 12 people and is only open for 90 minutes for dinner!  One seating and then they’re done. The wife was the chef and she was great!  If it weren’t for having the best meal of our lives yesterday, we would’ve been over the moon for this meal. It was excellent!  Again, we had a course with soft boiled egg with mushrooms and garlic. It was amazing but not as good as last nights. Very complex flavors and textures though!  Then we had tempura vegetables that were delicate and perfect with a little soy sauce for dipping. Beautifully executed!  We also had cauliflower soup with a scoop of some kind of whipped cheese that was super light and some kind of shaved ham strips that were perfectly salty and acted as the seasoning for the dish. It was very tasty. She’s very good!  Our dinners came, I had a steak in a shallot cream sauce with mushrooms and pieces of salami sprinkled all over, again to act as the seasoning for the dish. The steak was perfect, nice and European medium rare. The sauce was so creamy and the shallots added such a punch of flavor and the mushrooms were delicious. It also had these crisp potatoes in it that were so perfect between them and the salami it made for a top notch meal!  I ate 2/3 of mine and the traded with Emily. She had the fish of the day, Haddock, in a shrimp and coconut sauce. Kinda Asian. Again, Brian was eating fish and enjoying it!  I like it when it flakes off in big chunks and doesn’t taste fishy. It was a really good dish with sautéed spinach that barely touched the pan so it still had texture and was really yummy. Both meals were top notch!!!  When I research a restaurant, I’m rarely wrong!  This was a winner!  For dessert we had a profiterole and a deconstructed tart au citron or lemon tart. Both were excellent. The tart citron was bright and fresh and the perfect way to end a great meal. We left and walked around the city to see it at night. It was peaceful and pretty and atmospheric!  It was a quiet day but every once in a while those feel really good!  Tomorrow we have some big plans so stay tuned!  The pictures are gonna be AMAZING tomorrow!!  Thanks so much for caring and reading. I’m always amazed at how much joy I get from blogging these trips and the fact that other people seem to enjoy it makes it even more rewarding for me!
