Day 11 in Dinan, Brittany.
It's a beautiful city. It feels VERY medieval
with all the half-timbered houses. It's also much as we imagined it in
Brittany today, very hazy and misty.
It was the perfect atmosphere to
explore this great town!!
We started the day with some croissants and
Kouign Amman then went for the Rick Steves city walk for Dinan.
If you
know who he is, I think his city walks are the very best!
I highly recommend them and his guide
books to anyone who travels to Europe! We walked all throughout this
compact city and really enjoyed the feels of a true working city.
Tourism is just a part of their economy, so you get to see people living
their lives which is the best part of traveling. Seeing what daily life
is like around the world!
After that, we walked down a HUGE hill to
the river and the city port. It was beautiful. It really makes you feel
like you're at least watching the Middle Ages. It's so charming! After
that we hiked back up that hill and onto the ramparts of the city.
We
had some stunning views and it was easy to see why nobody ever was able
to breach the city walls!! We went into a spectacular church from the
12th century. Like most churches in Europe, it's been added onto and
changed, but it was one of the more unchanged ones we have seen yet. It
was easy to see all the parts that were still there from the 1100s!!
Dog Love by Proxy.... |
Very cool!!!!
Then we looked for a creperie for lunch, but they were all
PACKED with locals, so I went to a little shop Rick Steves recommended
and got another Kouign Amman, heck, I earned it after that walk! LOL.
And also got some delicious salted caramel candies and cakes that looked
very much like our Breton Cakes. We talked about Rick Steves and how
she's in his book and she was happy to see that.
She gave me a bunch of
free stuff because of it. When I asked for a Kouign Amman, she asked me,
do you know what these are?
I said, "I make these at home!" She was truly impressed. I told her I own a Creperie Breton and make Gateau Breton, Kouign Amman and true buckwheat crepes. She asked me a few questions to see if they were truly authentic. I passed her test so she really was wonderful after that and gave me even more free stuff!!!

It
was one of those great experiences that makes travel such an
addiction!! After that we went home and took a nap, determined to find a
good creperie and wait however long to get in for dinner. We found one
called La Cour Saint Sauveur. It was fantastic!!
We learned how truly
authentic our crepes really are. Also, all the different directions we
can go with our crepes. A lot of them would only be for special events
and such, but, for example, Emily had a crepe with scallops, mushrooms,
and a leek cream sauce.
It was delicious! I had one to compare with ours. It was a bacon egg and cheese and it was GOOD!!!!
We then split a crepe with ham similar to prosciutto, cheese and mushrooms with arugula on top. It was also delicious! We had a hard rose' apple cider with our crepes that was so fantastic!
Don't forget to have our That French
Place Sparkling Cider with your buckwheat crepes, because it truly is
the authentic way to eat them and it's SO darn good together!!! For
dessert we split one butter and sugar crepe and one crepe with nougat
ice cream, sautéed apples, almonds, salted caramel sauce and whipped
cream. One word...HEAVEN!!!!! Now we are home and getting ready for
bed. We leave tomorrow
for our return to Paris in the late afternoon. We can't wait.
Unfortunately, that means the adventure is almost over :(.
But we will
enjoy every moment we have left here in France and look forward to our
return!! Thanks all for following us on our journey and we hope you are
all getting a feel for our adventure and hopefully living some of it
through us. And I personally hope it inspires you all to travel more!
Nothing opens a persons mind like seeing the world.
Nothing closes ones
mind like staying in one place forever! As one of my heroes Rick Steves
says, "Until next time, Keep on traveling!"
